6 Most Common Mistakes HVAC Employers Make

Posted by | March 2, 2015 | Jobs and Careers Blog

HVAC employers may be making these six common mistakes. In fact the entire employment industry is known to make some of these mistakes. With HVAC jobs it is very important to hire employees that are trained and have completed all of their on the job training requirements. For job seekers there are some cues that are used to tell them the job they need and want is available based on their qualifications. Other parts of the process are about the hiring process.

1. Lack of Planning

Planning is very important from start to finish. For employers who do not plan out the process from the job post to the hiring interview, things can go wrong when looking for an HVAC employee. The planning process has to decide what goes into the job posting, how many interviews will occur, the assessment portion, and finally who and how the decision to hire will be made. Most often the process is rushed which leads to hiring individuals that move on quickly, do not perform well, and very little job hiring processes get the motivated worker.

2. Only One Interview

It takes more than one interview for a person to show how worthy they will be for any job in HVAC. Getting someone on the phone for a short interview will through them off. The longer planned phone interview gives them a chance to answer questions well. With a final in person interview the employer doing the hiring should have a feel for how this person will answer questions. Doing one interview means the perspective employee is on their interview game.

3. Incorrect Job Postings

Without planning the job posting can be missing a lot of information. It might lead more individuals to apply even if they do not have all of the qualifications an employer is looking for. Taking the time to write a proper job posting is essential.

4. Not Posting in the Correct Location

Posting on a website that is not meant for HVAC employees will often mean no one sees it or they see it too late. It is better to use a combination of locations to post, but the main website should be one designed for HVAC employees and employers to find each other versus a larger job search engine.

5. Hiring Before Assessment Tests

Assessment tests should be done prior to the last job interview. A lot of companies will do cursory assessment tests and leave the more in depth ones for later. This is not going to work to your advantage. Rather the assessments need to show if the person is as truthful about their skills as they say in interview.

6. Not Checking Resumes

This is part of time management during the interview process. It is important to check on more than employment and personal references. Calling the education center to find out about the perspective employee ensures they have the education and training required.

These are just some of the common mistakes that could lead to the wrong employee and how to correct them for the right employee.
