Hiring Range: $33,441 – $45,274

Our Department
The Department of General Services provides services and support to both internal and external customers through the operation of seven divisions, each with unique missions: Airport, Buildings and Grounds, Capital Projects Management, Fleet Management, Radio Communications, Waste and Resource Recovery, and a consolidated Administration division.

Our Position
This position serves as a member of our HVAC team in our Building and Grounds division. This position will provide preventive maintenance and inspections of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Inspects wiring, controls, and calibrations; cleans coils and blowers; checks motors and belt tension; changes filters; lubricates mechanical connections. Performs housekeeping duties on all HVAC systems and in all mechanical rooms; assists in maintaining inventory and records of parts and equipment used; recognizes and reports deterioration, repair needs, and/or maintenance needs to supervisor. Performs other work as required. Uniforms are provided.
This position is a part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.
Position Requirements and Preferred Skills
High school diploma or GED; completion of an HVAC vocational/technical training program; one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of HVAC maintenance and repair
• Ability to operate and maintain specialized tools used in HVAC and related building trades and read and interpret manuals, specifications, drawings, plans, and blueprints
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers
• Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physically demanding work including, but not limited to, walking up and down stairs, standing for prolonged periods, squatting, stooping, bending, twisting, stretching, crawling, and reaching overhead.
Other Requirements
Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within 30 days of interview date.
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice’s “Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy” and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.
Position Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. – may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays
