Job Description

Applications are invited for a HVAC Mechanic II position at the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR)/University of Maryland College Park in Rockville, MD.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Plant Superintendent, operates and services a variety of commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including a chiller plant, a steam plant, air handlers, air compressors, split systems, water source systems etc.. Responsible to coordinate and oversee work by subcontractors while completing tasks related to HVAC maintenance. Functions as a team member involved in a variety of multi-trades tasks including mechanical, electrical, and structural as needed to ensure the operation of a safe and dependable laboratory and research facility.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED AND Six years progressively responsible experience in any combination of air conditioning, refrigeration, temperature control, steam distribution, or heating trades.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge normally expected of an HVAC Mechanic of this level of the principles of air conditioning and refrigeration; of the practices and techniques used in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems; of refrigerant types, environmental impact, and gas reclamation procedures and equipment. Working knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the refrigeration trade; of National Electric Code; of basic mathematics including area, volume, and weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. Working knowledge of plumbing, steam fitting, and the electrical trades as they pertain to HVAC systems. Skill in the installation, repair and maintenance of commercial or industrial HVAC equipment and systems; in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; in welding, brazing, soldering, and silfoss; in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, drawings, specifications, and contract documents; in the use of dial indicators, Vernier calipers, and depth micrometers; in using computers to diagnose HVAC system problems. Must be able to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment, read and explain manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing and operation; to prepare written reports; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to provide direction and training to mechanics and other maintenance personnel in the HVAC trade.

Preferences:
Experience working with the Siemens Apogee Building Automation System. Work experience in a laboratory setting. MD 2nd Class Stationary Engineer’s License or equivalent. (DC 3rd is considered equivalent) Journeyman HVAC license.

Additional Certifications: Must have valid Level I and Level II CFC certification.
Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C Driver’s license, or equivalent, with fewer than 6 points

Physical Demands: Applicant may be required to work in confined spaces with pipes and other equipment, hot and humid areas, loud and dusty attic spaces near motors, and heights up to 35 feet. Job responsibilities may require heavy (50 lbs or more) lifting and pushing, and work in potentially adverse weather on grounds and roofs. Regular hours will be dayshift Monday-Friday. This position is considered Essential, subject to a 24 hour day, 365 day/year span of operation. This position is expected to be “on call” periodically in accordance a rotating duty schedule, after hours service calls are to be expected during summer months and times of extreme, inclement weather. Must be able to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Due to the nature of the position, must wear safety footwear provided by the university.
