GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses a vast and priceless collection of art which requires a stable environment for preservation and conservation. Integral to this, is the operation, maintenance and repair of an extensive Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and the supporting equipment such as centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, air handlers, and associated steam systems. The Engineering Shop Maintainer is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all subject equipment and systems.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Performs highly responsible independent work under general supervision in the operation, maintenance and repair of all Museum mechanical equipment at an advanced level, illustrating technical proficiency in each area
  • Maintains environmental conditions in all Museum spaces
  • Thorough and complete knowledge of the Museum’s floor plans and buildings • Chiller operation, repair and maintenance
  • Cooling tower operation, repair and maintenance
  • Air handler operation, repair and maintenance
  • Heating and ventilation operation, repair, and maintenance
  • Pump operation, repair and maintenance
  • Steam supply, condensate return and related equipment operation, repair and maintenance
  • Valve operation, repair and maintenance
  • Variable frequency drive operation, repair and maintenance
  • Pneumatic and digital control operation, repair and maintenance
  • Monitors and maintains environmental conditions in all Museum spaces
  • Operates the Museum Building Management System (BMS) and local HVAC control
  • Troubleshoots and repairs mechanical problems
  • Makes routine examination of the need for repairs and maintenance
  • Responds to building emergencies
  • Prepares and maintains records on work performed and materials used
  • Performs related work as required by the Museum including work on special projects and work within all buildings owned or operated by the Museum
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a disability, sincerely held religious belief, or pregnancy, or because you are a victim of domestic violence, stalking, or sex offenses).

 

Experience and Skills:

  • Valid New York City Fire Department Refrigeration Operator’s License
  • Minimum two years experience in subject museum maintenance work or equivalent
  • Minimum two years experience with centrifugal chillers and associated mechanical equipment
  • Working knowledge of BMS systems and HVAC controls
  • Specialized skill as a mechanic

 

Knowledge and Education:

  • College degree preferred / technical curriculum
  • High school diploma or equivalency is required
  • Valid New York City Fire Department Refrigeration Operator’s License
