Plumbing Supervisor
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Repair & Maintenance
Cambridge, MA
Full Time

Pay Range: $88,550 – $120,000

Plumbing Supervisor will be responsible for managing, mentoring, motivating and holding accountable a team of plumbers; providing direction and technical expertise to staff as well as supplemental contractors; and providing planning and project management related to evaluating and prioritizing deferred and preventative maintenance necessary to optimize systems and resources in a safety conscious manner.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sets standards of performance and service and ensures the quality of team work and adherence to plumbing code in conjunction with the Work Planning Group, reviews, prioritizes, assigns, and facilitates team work on a daily basis.
  • Schedules preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Responsible for the timely completion of team work
  • Provides leadership and ongoing supervision to the Plumbing team\
  • Provides technical expertise to assist team members in their work
  • Identifies training needs and resources
  • Communicates pertinent information to fellow supervisors, team members, customers and other service providers
  • Responds to and is available for emergency situations
  • Provides weekend supervisory coverage on rotating basis
  • Plans for special events
  • Develops, communicates and implements short and long-range projects
  • Estimates labor requirements for work orders when appropriate.
  • Maintains the cross connect program and maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Reviews and approves timecards and work orders to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensures that materials used on the job are charged out accurately.
  • Provides feedback to the Manager on plumbing equipment and systems needing major repairs or replacement.
  • Responds in a timely manner to complaints from customers concerning plumbing malfunctions or emergency situations.
  • Identifies and addresses equipment, maintenance and materials need
  • Works with other members of the Facilities and MIT community to address and solve a wide variety of problems
  • Supports and enforces the Department of Facilities’ policies and procedures
  • Maintains personnel records and other data as necessary (e.g. for performance measurement)

Qualifications/Technical Skills:

  • Must have a Massachusetts Master Plumber’s License with 5 years of practical experience in the supervision of Plumbers.
  • Must have knowledge of building cooling and heating systems and how they relate to plumbing systems
  • Must have a strong work experience with underground utility systems, such as water, sewage, and steam distribution.
  • Will be required to interface with City Inspection Services and local authorities relative to MIT’s Backflow Prevention Program and other Regulatory Programs as necessary.
  • Must have direct experience in a facility management preferably in an educational environment
  • Business management and budgeting experience required.
  • Experience in a union environment with knowledge of Labor Relations and conflict resolution desirable.
  • Must be computer literate with e-mail, Internet and local area networks.
  • Must be available to work any shift, weekend, and/or holiday if necessary.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of all plumbing facilities throughout the Institute.
  • Ensures the proper, safe, timely and efficient completion of work to provide water, waste disposal systems, and natural gas and other plumbing services required by the community.
  • Repair and Maintenance is a 24/7 operation. Must be available to respond to off-hour emergencies and standby supervisory coverage on a rotating basis on weekends and holidays.
